Title: “The Call”
Author: Francisco Morales Domínguez
When fate deals you a cruel blow, remember that life is a
game of dice: the more prepared you are, the better your roll. My name is
Carlos Pérez, and I work as an office clerk. One day, I was at the office, like
every other day, when my cell phone started vibrating. I answered it,
intrigued. On the other end, they asked for my name. I confirmed my identity,
puzzled. They told me I was being called from the bank, that I had a debt of
3,000 euros and had to pay it immediately with my card. I replied that I had
another very important call on the line and asked them to call me back in ten
minutes. At first, they seemed reluctant to call me back, but they agreed when
I told them it was my mother, who was in the hospital. As soon as I hung up, I
called my bank and asked if I had a debt of 3,000 euros, and they denied it. I
told them what happened, and they warned me to be careful of scams and to
cancel my card in case they were planning to defraud me.
Ten minutes passed, and I didn’t receive a call. They
realized I hadn’t fallen for the scam and decided not to call in case I had
alerted the police. For once, my mother telling me that one of her cousins
had fallen for one of these scams was helpful in preventing me from falling
for it myself. For once, going to see my mother hadn’t been a waste of time,
and receiving her affection was a great comfort.
The end.
